Solwodi Deutschland e.V. - an organisation for woman
Education for girls in need
In Mombasa, the second largest town in Kenya and the most important port in east Africa, many children suffer from the consequences of poverty and violence. The children of prostitutes, in particular, are disadvantaged. Frequently, they are neglected by their mothers, sexually molested by their mothers’ clients and, in some cases, are forced to become prostitutes themselves. The Solgidi Project initiated by Solwodi Deutschland e. V., a women’s organisation, wants to change this situation and facilitate an alternative way of life for the girls. Since 2002 it has made it possible for the daughters of prostitutes in Mombasa and in the Kilindini district to attend school. Solgidi now pays the school fees for 141 girls – starting with the kindergarten and continuing to more senior schools. Girls who are particularly good pupils also obtain a place at college.
Support from the Peter Ustinov Foundation
A small team comprising two social workers and many voluntary female helpers look after the girls and their families. Support from the Peter Ustinov Foundation has made it possible for workshops and meetings to be held for the schoolgirls, their mothers and sisters. Apart from this, those who work on the project visited their homes, purchased food and school uniforms for those among their charges who were particularly needy and appealed to the schools to show understanding for the girls’ situations.
The Peter Ustinov Foundation becomes involved in this and further projects to benefit children in need and their families. Please join us in our humanitarian project and give children a future with hope.
