18.09.09: “Skill at handling prejudices”
The Ustinov Institute in Vienna publishes a new practical guide for primary schools
The Sir Peter Ustinov Institute in Vienna for researching and combating prejudice has presented a new handbook which is intended to help primary school teachers to classify prejudice at school and deal with it in a targeted manner. The project has been sponsored by the Austrian Federal Ministry for education, art and culture, the Swiss Peter Ustinov Foundation in Geneva and the Peter Ustinov Foundation in Germany.
The handbook is entitled “Expertise when dealing with prejudice – A consciousness of prejudice when teaching in primary schools”. It is intended to illustrate how prejudices play a crucial role as early as childhood and how important it is to take this subject into account during primary school lessons. Specific examples are used to allow primary school teachers to design lessons with prejudice in mind.
A cross-border approach has been adopted for this publication, and experienced authors from Switzerland, Austria and Germany have contributed to this publication. The aim is for it to demonstrate that a critical approach to the topic of “Prejudice” is in the interest of the development of individual children but it is also of tremendous relevance for the organisation of a society which is open to the world and free of discrimination.
The idea to produce this handbook followed a meeting of specialists at the Sir Peter Ustinov Institute in Vienna in March 2007. This event examined research into prejudice and how to combat it and was entitled “Prejudice in childhood: How does it occur? How can it be counteracted?”
“Skill in dealing with prejudice” is available free of charge to download from the Peter Ustinov Foundation’s website.
