18.01.10: Development of schools in partnership

The children in Ganap in the south-eastern part of the Kalahari Desert have every reason to celebrate. Thanks to spontaneous support from the Peter Ustinov Foundation it has been possible to make rapid progress with the construction of the classroom for which they have been waiting so long. Consequently, the children can soon move their “schoolroom” from under a tree into a real school building.

The inhabitants – and, in particular, the children – in Moshaweng Valley in the Kalahari desert, one of the poorest regions of South Africa, urgently need support. Future prospects of around 50,000 Tswana, who were resettled to the isolated desert region at the time of the apartheid regime, are – even today – dismal.

For this reason, the Frankfurt International School (FSI), a partner of the Peter Ustinov Foundation for many years, has been involved in this region since 1991. As part of the “Kalahari Experience Trust”, schools are established, repaired and modernised. Apart from this, the helpers assist the local teachers by providing regular lectures.

Two years ago the South African government decided to set up new compulsory starter classes in South African schools. The purpose of this is to start education earlier for South African children. To date, the Kalahari Experience Trust has assisted five schools in the Moshaweng Valley to build the new classrooms required for this.

For many years the Peter Ustinov Foundation has supported the Kalahari Experience Trust to renovate and equip schools, thus again emphasising its desire to improve access to education for all children in the world.
