15.03.10: Shared commitment to children
The support provided for the education programme by the Peter Ustinov Foundation puts on a solid basis the Philharmonie’s future new range of activities – which are often both education and social work – for children and young people at schools in Essen. By setting up the education office at the Philharmonie, it will now be possible to put in place a varied programme of activities in over twenty schools in Essen with around 700 pupils, in particular in the school sector with a high proportion of migrants.
Over the next three years, Dr. Barbara Volkwein, the music educationalist, will implement different projects in the new education programme. The varied range of activities with elements such as composition projects and visits to concerts offers the children and young people from schools in Essen the opportunity to gain cultural and social skills in a creative way through the medium of music.

In Germany, “Education, school and upbringing” is a key area in which the Peter Ustinov Foundation is active. This area of sponsorship focuses on intercultural and creative musical projects with children and the encouragement and support of the network of what are to date seven Peter Ustinov schools.
In addition to the fight against prejudices, the theme running through the Foundation’s projects is an improvement of educational opportunities as a bridge to a better future for the children involved. For the Peter Ustinov Foundation this also includes extensive encouragement of music and the arts for children and the development of children’s creativity which this entails. It is intended that children with very different national and social backgrounds will get to know and understand each other through the shared experience or practice of music and drama.
This concept is put into practice once again through cooperation with the Philharmonie Essen. For many children culture only plays a minor part in their daily life. Thanks to the programme of activities for young people, children have an opportunity to discover culture for themselves. The Peter Ustinov Foundation supports the programme because it corresponds to the intention of the Foundation to help to develop the personality of children and young people at a creative and artistic level. It promotes both the creativity and the social skills of children, making an important contribution in the field of “Integration in schools”.
